We are proud to welcome almost 300 students for each session who choose to improve their knowledge of the French language and culture at the Alliance française de Manchester !

What we provide:

Courses are designed to develop spoken French for immediate social and professional use.

Your progress is monitored through regular homework and end-of-level evaluations. Students will benefit from the close attention of our fully qualified teachers (all French native speakers) specifically trained and experienced in teaching French as a foreign language.

For all the courses below, regardless of the level, the emphasis is put on spoken French.

Courses from Beginners right up to Fluency

As a member of the Alliance Française de Manchester you have access to the mediatheque for a year.

*Concessions on course fees to full time students, unemployed and senior citizens on production of relevant proof.

Courses fees are not refundable or transferable under any circumstances. Alliance Française reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient students. Only in this case will payements be refunded or credited.

 Beginners 1
  •  
    This course for complete beginners (or almost) will give you the basis for further studies in French. You'll learn simple ways of getting by and asking for help and you'll be able to introduce yourself and to establish first social contacts.

 Beginners 2
  •   You may have done a GCSE course a while ago or you've studied French formally
    previously for at least 30 hours. By the end of this course, you'll be able to get by in everyday situations such as at the station or in a hotel. You'll be able to have short conversations in the present tense to describe your daily routine for instance.

  •   In this course you'll learn to talk about what you've done recently, where your last holiday took place, what you did last weekend or what kind of a child you used to be!
    By now you'll be able to converse and interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

 Elementary 2
  •   A course where you'll deal with most practical aspects of everyday life such as buying clothes or finding your way in a town. You'll also learn to discuss your plans for the future. By the end of this course you should have a fair idea of how to express yourself in present, past and future.

 Elementary Revision
  •  
    After Elementary 2, an intensive 10-week revision class. A lot of oral work in class, with your own exercise-book, CD and transcripts for a chance of further practice at home.

 Intermediate 1
  •   This level tackles suggestions and invitations. You'll learn to socialise and give your opinion on food, entertainment, places of interest or towns. In conversation, you'll be able to agree or disagree giving simple explanations and points of view.

 Intermediate 2
  •   You have studied the language before but wish to go beyond the survival stage. You can express yourself in the present, past and future but need some revision. You'll do just that in this course as well as learning to express your feelings using the subjunctive tense. You'll acquire ways of showing your interest, enthusiasm or disappointment.

  •   This course aims to broaden your range of vocabulary and to extend your grammar skills so that you start expressing yourself using longer sentences with connective words. This will help you to structure your conversations, adding detail and precision. For example, you'll be able to compare and give your opinion on working hours in France and in your own country.

  •   You are a fairly independent speaker of French. You can interact with native-speakers quite spontaneously. You are now developing your knowledge of French culture and making comparisons with what happens in your own country. In this course, you will talk about the French press, the arts, French organizations and solidarity.

    An informal class consisting of one hour of " à la carte" grammar revision at an advanced level , followed by two hours of discussion and debates on various topics. A great way to maintain a good level of fluency without forgetting your grammar. No book needed.

A tailor-made study programme will be offered to meet your professional objectives based on an initial assessment of your needs. We have successfully trained clients working in the catering, service, distribution, technology, finance and production sectors.

    Step 2: Assess your needs
    Our consultant will come to your company to assess your needs free of charge to evaluate your existing language level and to assess your needs and objectives.
    According to the goals you want to achieve, we establish, for each student/group, a custom-made language programme.

    Step 3: Choose your course
    The Alliance Française can offer:

    French at your desk
    Minimum disruption to your work schedule with tailor-made tuition (available at any level) at your premises. Training programmes are ideally organised into modules of 30 hours with a minimum of two hours per week.

    French à la carte
    Tailor-made tuition (any level) at our premises that gives the most flexible approach for short to medium term training needs: from semi-intensive programmes over a few days to weekly 2 hour sessions over a few months.

    Speciality French
    For the Legal, Hotel & Catering, Tourism Professions. Other specialities on request.

    Three-day immersion course
    Three consecutive days immersion - (intermediate and advanced levels) - 6 hours per day with a variety of tutors, at our or your own premises. Ideal for those who need an urgent refresher course.

    French over the phone
    For people who often deal with French speakers over the phone (managers, bilingual secretaries etc.). You do not even have to leave your desk for it, simply agree a day and a time in advance, and spend 20 minutes speaking French to a specially trained French native teacher. Minimum level: intermediate, 10 sessions minimum. £190 for 10 sessions.

    Step 4: Progress Evaluation
    A progress report is made every 30hrs by your instructor to ensure proper progress monitoring. A final evaluation is conducted to check if you have met your objectives.

    Step 5: It's time to start
    You set the timetable and the start date. We select the right trainer(s) and teaching materials. Et voilà, you speak French!
