’Singing the Great War’ by Dr Barbara Lebrun

Dr Barbara Lebrun, Senior Lecturer in French Cultural Studies at the University of Manchester, will get you to experience the conditions within which the poilus (WW1 French soldiers) found some much-deserved musical relief. Whether for propaganda, pacifism or pure escapism, songs were a-plenty during the Great War, and the talk will include and contextualise a large selection of extracts –you might even wish to sing along!

The talk will be in French, with a PowerPoint presentation in English. It will be followed by a short discussion, where you will be able to share your thoughts.
