16 April: L.S. Lowry and his Teacher, the French Impressionist Adolphe Valette

A fascinating insight into the relationship between the two artists.

A talk by Cécilia Lyon, curator and author of the book "Adolphe Valette & L.S. Lowry" (Prose Book Publishing, 2020).

On Friday 16 April @ 6.15 pm, join us for a mesmerising visit of Manchester through the artworks of two of the city’s most iconic painters, L.S. Lowry and his art teacher Adolphe Valette… plus much more!

In 1906, L.S. Lowry started attending evening life classes at the Manchester School of Art under the tutelage of Valette, and he was to continue up to the 1920s. Valette, through his French teaching style, gave Lowry the artistic knowledge regarding line and composition which he would later use to great effect in his own drawings and paintings of the Northern industrial scene.

It is Valette who - chronologically - started to catalogue the industrial landscape in and around Manchester with an Impressionist palette, and it was Lowry who gave the various industries, the mills and the factories the ultimate artistic recognition that they deserve as an integral part of the life of the North West region.

The talk will explore the various locations of Manchester depicted by Valette and Lowry, but also the influence of the tuition of Valette on Lowry, the exhibitions in which both artists participated (including new discoveries about the Paris Salons), Lowry’s assessment of Valette’s tutelage … and much more.

This event will be held in English (with a touch of French) and interactive: Cécilia will be ready to answer all your questions.

Our Guest

Cécilia Lyon, writer and curator

Belgian-born Cécilia Lyon graduated from the University of Brussels. After moving to Manchester in 2002, she discovered the paintings of Adolphe Valette, and developed a passion for his work. She has published two biographies on the artist, one in English, one in French. Cécilia has curated exhibitions on Valette in France and in England. It is while she was curating her blockbusting exhibition of 2011-12 at The Lowry in Salford, Adolphe Valette, a Pioneer of Impressionism in Manchester, that the idea of writing an in-depth study of the artistic relationship between Valette and Lowry crystallised. She is thrilled to share her findings with the guests of the Alliance Française de Manchester.
