A fictionalised account of real events which occurred in a Cistercian monastery in Algeria in 1996. The monks have, for many years, lived in harmony with Muslims from local villages, partly because the monks provided a free outpatient clinic. They have a quiet, supportive respect for each other’s traditions. The harmony of the relationship and the monks’ personal beliefs are deeply tested when intolerant Muslim extremists become active in the surrounding areas.

The anti-hero Michel is a swaggering, misogynistic petty criminal who steals a car in the South of France and kills a policeman on the road to Paris. There he meets up with Patricia, an American ex-girlfriend. They talk aimlessly about literature, watch movies and make love. All the time the police are closing in on Michel.

Mon Oncle d’Amérique/My American Uncle

Directed by Alain Resnais - (1980, Comedy, 2h06)
With Gérard DepardieuNicole GarciaRoger Pierre
Cert. U

One of the oddest movies ever to emerge from the hand of director Alain Resnais, and also perhaps his most popular. A trio of people (Gérard Depardieu, Nicole Garcia, Roger Pierre) are presented as “case histories” by a lecturer—and we see them not only in their work environments, but also in terms of the cinematic role models (Jean Gabin, Jean Marais, Danielle Darrieux) that have helped  shape their self-images..
