Photo competition: Fashion and Dress codes

Every year the Fondation Alliance Française, which oversees the global network of Alliances Françaises, organises an international photo competition. The theme of this year’s contest is “Fashion and Dress Codes”.

What do a person’s clothes say about them? Clothing can express so much: personality, generation, cultural origin, age, community affiliation, gender identity… Whether dressed in a traditional costume, in overalls, for a celebration, in a tracksuit or a little black dress, following a trend or bucking one, or simply following the rules of a school, a team or a place of work - every day, every individual’s clothing is both an aesthetic and a social statement.

Manchester, formerly a great international centre for the cotton trade and the textile industry, is nowadays still a thriving cosmopolitan hive of clothing and style creation. Through this contest, we invite you to show us (and the world!) your unique vision of the everyday and extraordinary way people dress and the messages their clothes communicate.

In partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University, the Alliance Française de Manchester is organising its own local competition to select the winner who will represent Manchester at the international contest.

How to enter the competition:

The competition is free and is open to all entrants over the age of eighteen. However, professional photographers who have already gained widespread recognition for their photographic work and are living exclusively from the proceeds of it are not eligible to compete.

A title must be provided for each photograph, along with the following information:

  • details of the camera used,
  • the aperture,
  • the shutter speed,
  • if photographic film has been used, details of the film (brand and ISO number),
  • the type of photo: colour photograph, silver, black and white, or digital photo,
  • the date and place where the photo was taken,
