Frequently Asked Questions

Communication

How can I pass a message to my teacher?

Please contact our reception team at reception@afmanchester.org

For organisation purposes, all communication goes through reception.

What should I do if I am running late for my lesson?

No problem at all. Simply arrive when you can and join the class.

There is no need to inform your teacher if you are going to be late.

How do I let my teacher know that I will miss a lesson?

Please email our reception team at reception@afmanchester.org

They will inform your teacher.

Lesson materials and course books

Where can I buy the books for my progression class?

Our recommended supplier is Librairie La Page, an independent French bookshop based in London. You can enjoy a 10% discount by using the code AFMANCHESTER when ordering. The books are also available from several other well-known retailers.

We recommend ordering your book in advance to ensure it arrives before your course begins. However, please do not worry if your book has not arrived in time for the first lesson. Your teacher will display the relevant pages and exercises on screen so you can follow the class without any difficulty.

Why are the books for progression classes entirely in French rather than partly in English?

Our progression classes follow an immersion approach. Using materials fully in French helps you build vocabulary naturally.

It also ensures that our courses are inclusive. Not all of our students have English as their first language, so using French as the common classroom language allows everyone to learn on equal terms!

Your teacher will always guide you carefully through new language and concepts, so you will never be left to work things out alone. And don’t worry, all of our teachers speak English and can explain tricky grammar points in English whenever needed!

How can I access my Inspire book audio tracks and videos?

You have two options:

Option 1 – via the website:

  1. Go to https://inspire.hachettefle.fr/index_en.html
  2. Click the picture of your book
  3. Click the relevant tab (e.g., Activity book if you’re looking for the workbook audio tracks)
  4. Click Show more to expand the list if needed
  5. Find the relevant track number
  6. Click the play button to stream or Download to save the file to your device

Option 2 – via the Media+ app:

  1. Download the Media+ app on your smartphone
  2. Scan any page of your book
  3. The audio/video files for that page will appear on your screen

You can also check your teacher’s first course plan on the student portal. It includes a step-by-step guide with images showing exactly how to access all the audio and video resources.

How can I access the « Parcours Digital » activities for my Inspire book?

The Parcours Digital provides an additional 250 online activities to practise French. Here’s how to access them:

  1. Go to https://inspire1.parcoursdigital.fr/
  2. Create an account
  3. Activate your digital pack using the code found inside the front cover of your textbook
  4. Click Activités in the left-hand menu
  5. Select the unit number, then the lesson number, then the exercise number, following the list of suggested homework provided by your teacher (see your lesson plan, last slide)

You can also check your teacher’s first course plan on the student portal. It includes a step-by-step guide with images showing exactly how to access the Parcours Digital.

Where can I find the lesson plan shown on screen during my group class?

All the PowerPoint slides displayed by your teacher during the lesson (everything you see on the whiteboard) are uploaded to your student portal after class.

This PDF file contains the full course sequence so you can revise at your own pace.

I've lost the handout the teacher gave me in class. What should I do?

All handouts and materials from your lessons are uploaded to your student portal. You can download them there to revise at your own pace.

Extra support for your learning

How can I catch up on a lesson I have missed?

You can book a catch-up session with one of our teachers via this page

All catch-up bookings are managed online.

How can I make up for time I have missed?

You can book a class swap through our website here

This allows you to make up for the teaching time you missed by attending a different session.

Please note that replacement classes may not cover the same content, as groups progress at different speeds and are taught by different teachers.

I’m feeling lost with a grammar point or I’ve missed several classes. What can I do?

Don’t worry, it’s normal to need a little extra support sometimes! You can book a private catch-up lesson tailored to your needs.

These one-to-one sessions give you the chance to review tricky grammar points, practise at your own pace, and get back on track with confidence.

You can easily book your session through our website here

Classroom activities

Why do we sometimes work in pairs or small groups?

We occasionally divide the class into pairs or small groups for speaking activities to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to speak and practise as much as possible.

Working in smaller groups often helps quieter students feel more comfortable and increases the amount of speaking time for each person.

We aim to strike a balance between whole-class and small group activities so that all students can benefit from different formats and learning styles.

Online lessons

How do I access the link for my online lesson?

Your teacher will send you a link ahead of your first lesson. This link stays the same for the entire term and will always be pinned at the top of the course feed in your student portal

I want to print my course material before my lesson. What should I do?

If your teacher has prepared a handout, it will be uploaded to your student portal before the lesson so you can print it.

If you don’t have a printer, don’t worry! The teacher will display everything on screen, and you can complete the exercises in a notebook.

Do I need to have my camera on during online lessons?

Yes. Having your camera on helps replicate the interactive format of a face-to-face lesson, allowing everyone to participate fully.

Support and Special Needs

What should I do if I have special educational needs?

If you need any classroom or teaching adaptations to help you learn more effectively or access course materials, please let our reception team know at any time during the course.

We can ensure that relevant information is passed confidentially from one teacher to another, so your needs are supported consistently throughout your learning.
