The Palace of Versailles

Date: 18 May 2022, 6:00pm - 7:30pm GMT London, Lisbon

ONLINE GUIDED TOUR

Wed. 18 May - from 6pm to 7:30pm - Online Talk

Join us on Wednesday 18 May for an online guided tour of the Palace of Versailles organised by the network of the Alliances Françaises in the UK.

The site was first used 1623 by king Louis XIII as a hunting lodge and it was then decided to build a castle on the site in 1631. However, the Palace of Versailles is best known as the residence of “The Sun King”, Louis XIV, who expanded the castle into a palace from 1661 to 1715. Versailles became the capital of France due to the presence of the kings. During the French Revolution, the Palace of Versailles was emptied of its most precious belongings and little by little the population of the city returned to Paris, the original capital. Today, the Palace of Versailles and its gardens have been recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and together form one of France’s most visited heritage sites.

During this online talk, Eléonore Nicolas will give a detailed presentation of the Palace of Versailles, explaining the history and the design of the main rooms and the highlights of the garden and discussing significant people and events in the life of the Palace.

Here is a list of vocabulary to help you prepare for the talk.
