From Mon. 17 March to Mon. 21 July - Free entry during opening hours
The Alliance Française de Manchester is delighted to present this superb painting exhibition from the 17th of March to the 21st of July in its premises. Come and discover Paintings of Marseille by Jonathan Hensher.
Originally from London, Jon came to Manchester to study and work and has now lived in Manchester for more than 20 years. Art has always been very important to him, and he tries to draw and paint as much as he can. In his open-air landscape work, he seeks to produce a spontaneous response to the complexity of a scene in the hope of finding creative solutions to the challenges of space, form, light and colour.
I had only briefly passed through Marseille a couple of times before spending 4 or 5 days in the city in August 2024, during which time I produced these paintings. Having the opportunity to discover the city’s extraordinarily rich history, along with its distinctive atmosphere and visual character was a fascinating experience. The bustling Old Port, the dramatic coast with its rocky inlets, the winding streets of Le Panier… Marseille is a tremendously diverse and vibrant city, and in the short time I spent there, I was only able to scratch its surface. I hope that you’ll enjoy the exhibition and maybe think about visiting Marseille yourself!
